For packaging design, I love anything that has a bit of extra effort in the form of illustrative flair to
it. I find craft beer cans to be great examples of this. That’s why for this personal project I designed
an entire brand of craft beer called ‘Noplace Brewery’. Beer can designs are often very
experimental, so I thought having a theme of utopias and dystopias for my fictional beer brand
would work really well to create psychedelic style designs. I did half utopian designs, inspired by
nature and abundance, and half dystopian designs, inspired by rampant technology and destruction.
I enjoyed the process of developing ideas for this project, as I started with a lot of automatic drawings and random word prompts to try to create unexpected outcomes. This led to some interesting shapes and concepts. I also researched into retrofuturistic artwork from the 1970s and iconic cyberpunk/dystopian films from the past to feed into my practice.
